So, it seems I'm done for awhile and back to normal. Both the HP 2605dn and Epson R2400 printers had updates for Leopard. Oh, and yes, I updated my printer drivers. I'm not really knocking them, they make great products, and they're not alone in having badly designed Websites, Canon's isn't much better. But it still doesn't change my view of them much beyond having some decent customer support occasionally. So, my Nikon Coolscan 5000ED is back in business. Silverfast makes their software specific to each brand/model of scanner, so I have a choice now. The UUIDs generated by this site are provided AS IS without warranty of any kind, not even the warranty that the generated UUIDs are actually unique. The Version 4 UUIDs produced by this site were generated using a secure random number generator.

The Epson software works but Epson gives you Silverfast software too, and it's a small charge to update or upgrade your version. A Version 4 UUID is a universally unique identifier that is generated using random numbers. I also updated my Silverfast software for my Epson V750 scanner which wasn't compatible with Leopard. I reinstalled the original Scan 4.0, then installed the update 4.0.2, and then tested it with some slides. Welll, that literally removes it completely from your computer, and you either better have the original CD or know where it's on Nikon's Website, which I did find with a search - their Website isn't user friendly or easy to navigate. But Nikon had me first empty the trash and reboot the computer. With Apple, you simply find all the folders and throw them in the trash, which I did, except remember it's the full package with the libraries, etc.

The answer is one many PC's users know all too well, uninstall the software and reinstall it, then install the update, before testing it. Well, an inquiry with Nikon's technical support got an answer. Nikon did release an update, Scan 4.0.2, which I installed but couldn't get to run under Leopard.

They are a big company, and it would not take many of their resources to at least write a bug fix for this issue.

The fact that Vuescan solved the issue quickly, and they are a small company, makes me even more disgusted with how Nikon has ignored this issue. I don't think this problem exists with Macs earlier than those with Intel processors. Nikon knows that their software won't work with an Intel-based Mac, while using a motorized attachment like the SF-200 or SF- 210.

The solution you posted won't work, as far as I know. Unfortunately the problem I described is hardware-based, and Nikon has known about it for a long time. Unfortunately the Mac OSX 10.5 Operating System is not fully compatible with Nikon Scan software. Make sure you have plenty of Ram in your computer which will help with error issues. Open your scanned images in any version of Photoshop for best quality results as they may look poor in the scan software or the default Preview program. Good news is VueScan does work well for me and everyone else I know who had this issue. Plenty written about the ancient NikonScan software and how it is not fully compatible with intel Macs and OSX 10.5 (google Nikon Scan Mac OSX).
